Life Around the Campus

In China, all college freshman have to go through a month of military training. For the whole month of September, I've been seeing young boys and girls clad in camouflage colors with red badges on their arms. Sometimes you just can't help but admire the sophistication of the Chinese government in "maintaining stability" among the population. Hot-blooded 18 year olds leaving families, entering a new life stage of independence and searching for identity are ripe for revolutionary ideas and actions (re: 1987) so the government dumps them into military training first, where they learn discipline and patriotism.

The sight of all those young, impressionable minds dressed in military uniform does leave me slightly disturbed every day I pass by them. Orwell's 1984 anyone?
